Monday, September 22, 2014   A -Day - Band Day

Monday Morning Meeting  Protocol

8:20-9:15
 Students will make their way down to the LGI room and participate in Monday Morning Meeting. Students will listen  and actively participate in the meeting. During the meeting students will do the following.
- Greeting - In preparing for the year the students have been working on professional greetings. student have been learning to introduce themselves by making eye contact, shaking hands in a professional manner, clearly saying their names and actively listening.
- Morning Buzz- Students will participate int he interactive news segment of the Monday Morning Meeting. During this time students will learn objectives for the week, review previously taught content, current events, weather and self- reflection.
- Guest Speaker- This week students will listen to Mrs. Russell our middle school principal to learn about her career as an educator and the importance of education and working hard at a career.

Pages 22-25 Air Quality

Science Objectives: As a result of today's lesson students will...
1.) Learn about the major sources of air pollutions.
2.) Identify the causes of smog and acid rain.
3.)Describe what people can be done to improve air quality.

What are some of the things that you just learned about Air Pollution ? What are some facts really stuck out to you?

Learning Activity: Student will define the work pollutants using context clues as harmful substances in the air, water or soil.  Students will  learn the sources of pollution as natural sources created from nature and pollution created from human activity.  Students will then work in cooperative groups of three to  learn about smog and acid rain. Students will define the type of pollution, learn the causes, and effects of these types of pollution.  Students will present to their group  members.

Evidence of Learning: By the end of the lesson students will gather information and present it to their group members. The following class students will review.

Lesson Activity: Students will take the atmosphere assessment to demonstrate knowledge of learning.

What are some ways people are helping reduce air pollution?

Evidence of Learning: Students will complete assessment.

Students will work in groups of four and five on the following guiding principles.

Students will define one of the guiding  principles.  Brainstorm and write down five examples of this guiding principles. Students will also create a presentation to teach the rest of the STEM team their selected guiding  principle.

-Understand the purpose of science and how they will use their senses to study science.

Lesson Focus:  Atmosphere- The Air Around You

Objective - Students will...
Describe the composition of the earth's atmosphere.
Explain  how the atmosphere is important for supporting living things.

Activity- Students will watch following video.  Students will identify the gases in the atmosphere . Nitrogen  ( 79%)and Oxygen (21%)
Students will work in groups to read pages 7-8 and identify the composition of the atmosphere.
Students will also share the importance of the atmosphere.

Evidence of Student Learning-  Students will write down information in their notes and share knowledge with each other

Training:

Session 1- LGBTQ Training - Teachers were educated about the group of students who identify themselves as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Questioning and the way that educators need to make sure that these students are valued and respected in the learning community. Teachers discusses the roles of men and women and how society views them and how we need to be sensitive to how we speak to our students and how we need to promote a sense of community with all students in our schools.

Session 2- Mohawk Sensitivity Training - Staff  learned about Mohawk rights of passage as a new way for Mohawk men and women develop a sense of cultural understanding, pride, dignity, honor and as well give them the skills they need to have before they reach adult hood. This program has been successful and is helping the Mohawk students at Salmon River.

SUMMER IS COMING TO AN END

Hello Future STEM Students,

I trust that you have had a wonderful and productive summer filled with fun and games.  I have been very busy this summer preparing for this upcoming year. I am very excited for our curriculum this year. We will be learning about:

Weather and Climate
The Earth's Surface
Earth's Waters
Space
Scientific Method

We will be using a lot of online resources this year and you will be using the internet for everything. Make sure that you have internet access and access to technology.

I am looking forward to seeing all of you on the first day of school on September 4, 2014.

I hope the remainder of your summer is filled with fun and games and relaxation.
